As the baby boomer generation gradually enters the age of retirement, these adults will begin entering senior living communities and changing the way they are run somewhat. Baby boomers tend to live a more active lifestyle than seniors before them, and are interested in a variety of different things due to cultural and technological changes that they discovered in their later adult years. For this reason, senior living communities are learning to adapt to these changes in order to please the upcoming crop of baby boomers entering their living communities.
Baby boomers not only live a more active lifestyle, but due to the culture in which they grew up, they enjoy a variety of venues that senior living communities are adapting to. For instance, the transportation provided by senior living communities are driving their residents to venues they would not have thought of previously such as classic rock concerts, traveling to the beaches and lakes for leisurely activities and on more expansive shopping trips. The hours of available transportation is also changing so that they are driving the residents much later into the night than previously, as baby boomers tend to stay up much later than other residents living at the communities. The hours are also changing in the senior communities for in-house activities such as later fitness classes and their recreational centers are open later as well.
Different types of activities are becoming available for residents at senior living communities who are in the baby boomers generation. Baby boomers enjoy not only sedentary activities like board games and watching television, but they live active lifestyles and thrive on them. Senior living communities are beginning to add more physical activities such as golf, tennis, and fitness classes like aerobics, yoga and even dance classes for seniors. Some of these activities are offered at their senior living communities while others are available by transportation from the community to these types of venues.
The baby boomer generation wants more freedom and to live an independent lifestyle. They do not want to depend on others to take care of them, as they are still well enough and active enough to care for themselves. The senior living communities are adapting to this type of change in their residents by offering them more freedom in the activities and hobbies they are involved in, where the residents travel to and other forms of independent living.
Baby boomers have become accustomed to the advanced technology of recent years and as they begin living in senior communities, they expect the same accommodations. This includes access to computers and internet. For this reason, many senior living communities are adapting by including computers in their recreational centers with internet access there and in each resident’s rooms for those that have their own computers. Additionally, classes offered at senior living communities are expanding to include various computer-related courses such as how to use the internet, hardware and software computer applications, and teaching older seniors about utilizing the computer for their own benefit.
